The designing of packaging does not have a one size fits all approach. The function of any packaging is to protect your product until it is used by the consumer. The secondary function is to advertise your brand and to provide the consumer with the necessary information pertaining to the product.

Let us consider the protection aspect of packaging. In order to protect your packaging, you either need rigid packaging, such as a box or flexible packaging in the form of plastic bags, paper or plastic sachets and resealable zip-lock bags or pouches.

            Items such as dried fruit and nuts, chocolate, chips and biltong, spices and other food and snack items have different packaging requirements to that of alcoholic beverages, chemicals and detergents. Edible products require packaging in order to maintain their freshness and quality whereas, alcohol and other chemical items might be light sensitive and therefore need packaging that would protect them from light exposure. Products such as rice, samp and beans, legumes and seeds also have their individual packaging needs as these items can sometimes be sharp and can pierce the packaging resulting in loss or spoilt product and therefore need stronger materials that do not easily tear.

            Developing the correct make up of packaging material can be difficult for a product manufacturer looking to protect their goods between manufacturing, storage, transportation, sale, and even in the consumers’ cupboard.

The other aspect to consider when designing your packaging is how to market and advertise your brand.  To a product manufacturer, printing is as equally important as the protection of their product as this how the customer shops, i.e. with their eyes. You want to catch the customers’ eye with crisp, bright and magnificent coloured images. You also want to display important information such as best before dates, ingredients, instructions and any other important information the customer requires.
